Discussion: Break the Cutie by Kigurou-Enkou Discussion: Break the Cutie by Kigurou-Enkou
And I am back with another discussion comic! This time, it's on the trope of the same name: Break the Cutie.

So you have a character that's so sweet, so innocent, there's no way anything bad could happen to them, right?

Well, now we're gonna discuss on why we make bad things happen to them and how we do it. Just HOW bad can it get? And there are also several outcomes to doing so...

With me, I've provided three examples from my own comics: Elef (who is still trying to kill me), Chika (who is getting INFINITELY better in EtD sidestory) and Gerhild (who had her Pet the Dog moments looong ago). Marlene does not count, since I have yet to finish Fairy Tales of Despair.

I await your responses...

Elef base made by :iconelizabethsailor7:. He belongs to Sound Horizon.

My first thought would be to initiate character development, and as a way of showing how harsh that fictional world is/can be.

Well, naturally, those are the two common goals writers try to achieve for this. But there are many ways to do such...

Although I am only now starting work on my first attempt at writing actual plotlines instead of short independent stories (and am therefore a total noob at writing), I think about my characters and events almost every waking moment and actually plan on giving this treatment to at least almost half of my main characters to give them motivation for making the world a better place. Even The Heart of the group will be subjected to this early on.

Though it DOES depend on the story and whether you can pull it off without it sounding contrived? If I may, may I see anything you have for your story so far?

Here's the first chapter of the main story's prologue which also serves as the main character's backstory. vague-details.deviantart.com/a…
Please keep in mind that I wrote these a long time ago except for number 5, which I didn't spend much time polishing.
Also, I realize that chapter 2 has a plot hole in it, so I wrote a simple scene near the end (dialog only, so no spoilers) explaining it, as well as to serve many other functions. I think I can send it to you in a note if you're interested.

Oh! Forgot to mention this last time- I wouldn't break the "cutie" - just their bones.

I guess the best thing I can do is a tale of a Dungeons&Dragons Campaign I did about a few years ago. My normal group was there, all good gamers, with the exception of one new guy who had played a few early FF games, but never really done true RP'ing. He made his char a typical protagonist, wide-eyed and hopeful, and really thought that he could be the 'true' hero. While the others frowned at the notion, I rolled with it, and had a pretty decent idea. I didn't go Grimderp, but I would toss a very ambiguous choice every other mission or so. And then we reached the end. I'd noticed by then that he had a pretty vivid imagination, actively seeing whatever happened in his mind VERY clearly. So when I hit this, I tore into him. Everyone he had helped, everything he had done, prettymuch the entire bloody campaign was shoved back into the fray, I channeled just about everything I could come up with as the final villain fell, releasing one hell of a Thanatos Gambit. I didn't just break the char, I broke the player in that. That being said, he's still a great Roleplayer, and still plays campaigns every now and again.

I dunno what I'm really getting at with this tale, I guess all I can really say is that you want to break anyone, cutie or otherwise, it comes down to the right combination of buttons, both in the character, and in the readers. That being said, the closest to a "Cute" char that I've done or used in a while would be Delpha, Who channels Yandere without any outside help, so I don't think I could "Break" her without accidentally the world. Wall of text after just waking up, if I missed a point here I'm sorry.

Thanks. And honestly, that's not the only way to do it, the DM's guide flat out says to just pull people aside and tell em to not do that. Although, I do think I like my way better.

Breaking characters... I may not have much experience with this particular trope but I'd say it is best saved for Complete Monsters and characters whom are the Scrappy due to how prideful and boastful they are.

It's like the pride before the fall, you build them as someone your audience hates before you hit 'em where it hurts repeatedly until they are a complete wreck, possible giving these characters redeeming qualities.

Perhaps you can get the tropes Alas Poor Scrappy, Alas Poor Villain, and Cry for the Devil or alternatively you can get Kick the Son of a Bitch. It all depends on audience reactions.

Alternatively, you can break a character down to build them back up as a Determinator and an Iron Woobie using the breaking as fuel for Character Development.

I'm sure there are other possible uses, but I gotta go now.

First three paragraphs: Break the Haughty, right?

Well, as the TV tropes page states, sometimes these characters don't break and improve, but they break and SNAP. And then baaaad things happen...

Crap, I was thinking of that trope as well, whoops!

Looking at the page, I think I list the positive results of Break the Cutie. As for the negative, I suppose it can be used to further prove the setting is a Crapsack World, to prove the villain is a Complete Monster, or to show the characters Start of Darkness.

Well, the original showed Elef grieving over Misia, then immediately going into 'Fuck this shit!' mode. In Elegy, he suffers from, *ahem*, Magical Girl/Boy Depression, which causes him to realize that his revenge thing was pointless, then witchdom.

I only break characters if...
1. It is a result of their own actions to show how their actions (often stupidity or hubris) can lead to downfall.
2. It is a result of somebody else's actions because of indirect stupidity/hubris *and* the character's willingness to either trust the other character, not protect themselves from the character, or to break the other character as a result.
3. The character's idealism is unhealthy to the point where the disasters that befall upon them are a natural outcome: they did not prepare for these events, and now they must face the consequences.

My "whys" and "hows" are exactly the same: if the character's actions naturally led to the breaking because it's a natural part of the story, then those actions supply my reasons and how to do it.

Breaking characters for simply shock factor just builds up contempt for the writer. A deliberate break makes people think, "Oh crap. I hope that character will be okay." A forced break makes people think, "Now that's just cruel and this writer's a jerk."

I can answer that question but then I will have to kill you : 3

Author!Seth: Actually, was it a really good idea to have the chika separated with him. I mean Gerhild shouldn't be a problem but that dude, that dude want to hurt you. Got to say alyss, those are some unique clothes you got there, then again I have what I have like in my skype~ Sorry, always lets Discuss this. When you say break a character to see them suffer, can it have a good effect on them as a likable character?

Maybe Noriko and Sayaka (my Sayaka) could count as Break the Cutie?

I mean Noriko has one of the most powerful youkai in Gensokyo as a foster mother and she is sometimes exposed to the extent of her sadistic side.

And Sayaka is risking everything in order to protect her older sister.

What defines a character as innocent? Emma, well.. a potential BTC moment happened on June 6, 2040 when the limo her and Lauren were riding to their next client was destroyed by an [link] AH-66B Comanche II. Emma was thrown through an open window with such velocity she smacked into the concrete wall and broke her left arm, not to mention the loss of her mother at the age of 9, really hit them hard. -NOTTOMENTION- Nemo's entire existence.
